Hermannsburg Potters
The Western Aranda Artists paint their life and surroundings on their pots bringing to their canvas (and New Delhi) their country, their landscape and their own personalities.
Body, Clay, Form.
In this demonstration Darien Arikoski-Johnson will build a clay form while discussing his use of the body as a reference. He will then roll slabs and attach the slabs to the form using plastic and tape to suspend the slabs from above. This unique (and slightly odd) method of battling gravity enables A-Johnson to construct wish soft slabs and work in an intuitive manner. The forms he constructs eventually end up as canvases on which to develop imagery. He will discuss his thoughts on the relationship between physicality and perception.
Susan Biener responds to the environment by looking at form, color and texture and this influences how she designs an object. Her work consistently utilizes multiples to create density, fragmentation, and complication to attract the viewer into the space. For this demonstration, Susan utilizes the vessel form, coiling and sprig molding to discuss layering and encrusting the surface.
She likes to think that the art work may be used to stimulate emotion and intellect, to evoke memories, thoughts, moods and feelings.
Cooking in clay
Om Prakash Galav’s family has been making terracotta cookware in Rajasthan, for generations. Om demonstrated how terracotta utensils are to be used for cooking and the care they require, in a lunch time demonstration at Arthshila. The participants talked about food cultures, traditional recipes, cooking techniques and terracotta pots from across the country.
