101 Reflections

2023 | Glazed stoneware

Dhruvi Acharya’s assemblage of 101 sculptures are three dimensional representations of the ideas and images she addresses in her two-dimensional works. The ceramic pieces collectively focus on the human conditions; the loss of life (including non-human), inequality, and our dependence on the natural systems that our own bodies are a part of as we age.

The screaming flowers cry out for the flora and fauna driven to destruction by humans, while the cooking pots show our dependence on the same. A bed with nails signifies the loss of loved ones, and a commode chair embodies the aging and diseased. But there is also an element of joy. Of celebration of the deformed, the melting, the slightly oversized. Bulbous female bodies take up space in defiance of the objectification and shame they are subjected to. Acharya’s installation uses humor and whimsy to highlight the cycle of life, death and perseverance, creating a space for reflection upon personal and shared experiences.
